In a heartbreaking incident, tragedy befell a group of medical college students as five of them, including two girls, drowned while bathing at a private beach on a fateful Monday afternoon.

The victims, identified as Charukavi (23), Gayatri (25), Sarvadarshit (23), Praveen Sam (23), and Venkatesh (24), hailed from various regions, highlighting the devastating toll of the incident.

The group of twelve students, who had recently attended a wedding in Nagercoil, arrived in Kanniyakumari for a leisurely getaway. However, their outing took a tragic turn when seven of them were swept away by strong waves while bathing at Lemur Beach.

Prompt action by locals and fishermen averted further catastrophe, with rescue efforts saving two individuals from the tumultuous waters. The rescued students are currently undergoing treatment at Kanniyakumari District Government Medical College Hospital, alongside two others who collapsed witnessing the ordeal.

This tragedy underscores the importance of heeding weather warnings, as the National Disaster Management Authority had previously cautioned about rough seas in the region. Sadly, the incident adds to the toll of lives lost due to perilous sea conditions in Tamil Nadu, highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures and vigilance along coastal areas.
