BJP leader Khushbu Sundar has ignited a heated debate after labeling the Tamil Nadu government’s initiative to provide Rs 1,000 monthly to women heads of households as ‘alms’ or ‘pitchai’. Sundar’s remarks have drawn sharp criticism and triggered protests from various quarters.
Sundar, who is also a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), voiced her discontent during a protest against the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government, citing concerns over the drug menace and recent arrests related to a major drugs bust in the state.
In her statement, Sundar expressed skepticism that women would vote for the DMK if they perceived the financial assistance as charity. She emphasized the need for the government to address underlying issues such as the drug trade and the operation of state-run liquor outlets (Tasmac).
Following her comments, the women’s wing of the DMK organized protests across Tamil Nadu, denouncing Sundar’s stance.
In response to the backlash, Sundar defended her position on social media platform X, highlighting past instances where political figures had made similar remarks about welfare schemes. She reiterated her call for combating the drug menace and empowering women economically.
Tamil Nadu’s Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister Geetha Jeevan condemned Sundar’s remarks, asserting that they were derogatory and demeaning to the 1.16 crore women benefiting from the government’s scheme. Jeevan emphasized the significance of the financial assistance provided to women and criticized Sundar for her lack of understanding regarding women’s struggles.
The controversy underscores the broader debate surrounding social welfare programs and the perception of government assistance. As tensions continue to escalate, discussions regarding the effectiveness and impact of such initiatives remain at the forefront of public discourse.
