CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has urged the DMK government to give building permissions to more than 3,000 applicants within the Nagercoil corporation in Kanyakumari district, waiting for clearances for many months.

In a statement on Tuesday, EPS said he had made the announcement to upgrade the Nagercoil municipality into a corporation in September 2018 when he was the chief minister. Many of the streets in Nagercoil are only three feet wide, and many houses and shops have been damaged due to natural calamities. But the corporation was not giving permission for them to be demolished and replaced with new buildings, he said.

People’s representatives and the public have made many representations to the corporation authorities for permission for constructing new buildings. On November 18, 2022, the director of town and country planning held a meeting and said a recommendation would be sent to the government for demolishing and replacing old buildings in the Nagercoil corporation. The officer said it would soon be extended to other corporations in the state. But five months have lapsed since.

AIADMK organising secretary and former minister N Thalavaisundaram had raised the issue in the Tamil Nadu assembly in April in the assembly. The Minister for municipal administration had stated that there was a problem with continuous building area and planning permissions, recalled EPS. Four months have lapsed, these problems should be rectified and permission given for new buildings immediately, he said.
